Book of the Month: The Lean Startup

The Lean Startup by Eric Ries applies the principles of lean manufacturing, scientific testing and validated learning to the growth of early-stage companies. A New York Times Bestseller, Ries is responsible for beginning what’s come to be known as the lean startup movement.

A central principle to Ries methodology is that of “pivoting.” A pivot is defined as “a structured course correction designed to test a new fundamental hypothesis about the product and its potential growth.”  In essence, pivots are strategic moves based on a continuous stream of customer feedback. A company may start out producing a product with one set of customers or features in mind and later “pivot” one or more aspects of the business model based on the market response.
